The Silver Lining | An Ode to Waiting

So I’m waiting on a lot of things right now, some personal and some professional (you know, like having a book on submission). I know a lot of you also have things on submission right now or some of you may be on the query go-round. Or just waiting on book releases. It seems like the publishing industry is moving at a slower pace than usual, so I thought it might help if we turned the waiting into something fun. My horoscope seems to think I won’t be waiting too much longer on some stuff:

On the professional side, you’ll be able to reap the rewards of your efforts. The lean period is over, and your projects are suddenly kicking into gear. It won’t be too long now before you will see success.

Of course I hope it’s right! But just in case, I’ve compiled a Waiting! playlist based on my own music preferences. So if you’re waiting, I invite you to post your own playlist on your blog or in the comments here. Link me to it either way because I think everyone’s taste in music is so individual, I know I have some obscure choices on my list, and maybe in the end we can all listen to the grandest waiting playlist to help us pass these slow news-less days.

I’ve included select lyrics from the various song choices so you could see why I picked these songs.

WAITING ON THE WORLD TO CHANGE – John Mayer
it’s hard to beat the system
when we’re standing at a distance
so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change

CELEBRATE YOU – Veruca Salt
We’re quiet as two mannequins
Feasting on silences.

SLEEPING WHERE I WANT – Veruca Salt
This is my favorite time
I can sleep until the phone rings
And I doubt that it will.

BONEDRIVEN – Bush
i was wrong and i will wait
i was wrong and i will i will wait
a thousand lamps
won’t lift the dark
rest of our lives
might have already passed

GLYCERINE – Bush
Don’t let the days go by, Glycerine

WHISPER – Coldplay
Night turns to day and I still have these questions
You just won’t break, should I go forwards or backwards
Night turns to day and I’ve still got no answers

Just a whisper, whisper, whisper, whisper [x2]

Now I hear the sound of a ticking of clocks

SPEED OF SOUND – Coldplay
How long before I get in?
Before it starts, before I begin?
How long before you decide?
Before I know what it feels like?
Where To, where do I go?
If you never try, then you’ll never know.
How long do I have to climb,
Up on the side of this mountain of mine?

Look up, I look up at night,
Planets are moving at the speed of light.
Climb up, up in the trees,
every chance that you get,
is a chance you seize.
How long am I gonna stand,
with my head stuck under the sand?
I’ll start before I can stop,
before I see things the right way up.

FIND YOU DEAD – Letters to Cleo
Wait around and maybe I’ll
Forget about it after awhile
But instead I like to think ahead

And Ode to Maybe – Third Eye Blind
Tonight, well maybe
What you need I hope it finds you
Oh I might, I might be, well maybe
Maybe some day you’ll get it right
If I could bottle my hopes in a store bought scent
They’d be nutmeg peach and they’d pay the rent

PALM READER – Third Eye Blind
Believe in me and this lie
Tell me everything will be all right
Cause it’s so good to believe
But don’t turn my hope into a weapon

LINGER – The Cranberries
You know I’m such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha.
Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to,
Do you have to let it linger?

WAITING ON YOU – Weezer
Why haven’t you called me?
Did you forget me?
I need to know
When were you intending
To break the silence
And let me know?

Mine is the loneliest of numbers
Now is the loneliest of times
You’re 19 days late, but still I sit and wait
Waiting and waiting, waiting and waiting, waiting and waiting
Waiting on you

UNTOUCHED – The Veronicas
I wanna wanna wanna get get get what I want
Don’t stop
Give me give me give me what you got got
Cause I can’t wait wait wait any more more more more
Don’t even talk about the consequence

HEY HEY – Dispatch
Well I’m moving kind of slow
Down that same old path
Wasting time inside this hour glass

SLOW LIKE HONEY – Fiona Apple

Though dreams can be deceiving
Like faces are to hearts
They serve for sweet relieving
When fantasy and reality lie too far apart

So I stretch myself across, like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story

Okay, that’s enough for now. If I come up with more, I’ll either edit them in or maybe make a part 2 post.

But for now I want to see what songs would go on your ultimate playlist!

  1. OMG, those are awesome!!!

I love them all but this one made me laugh in regards to the authorly waiting situation –

    Why haven’t you called me?
    Did you forget me?

    HA!

On mine I’d include the classic Tom Petty – The Waiting is the Hardest Part!

    🙂

  2. Thank you thank you thank you.

I am totally there with you. Submissions are taking foooorrreevvveer.

And Breathe by Anna Nalick, as well as Sitting, Waiting, Wishing are on my submissions playlist.

    • Breathe!!! Good one, I used to love that song because it always made me think of writing. Sitting, Waiting, Wishing is Jack Johnson? I think I remember that one. I’ll add both of these, thanks for the suggestions.

    • Thanks! I know, I think I showed my age here too because most of my list is from the 90s. I didn’t even think of looking up anything younger. Or current. Doh!

  3. Great list, Shana. The Tom Petty came to mind, of course, but it’s already been mentioned a few times in the comments. I thought of Stay (Faraway, So Close) by U2. Most of the lyrics don’t really fit apart from the “faraway, so close”, but the yearning of the song sure fits.
