So my Mom is really cute because she runs a hard core American Idol pool for her friends and their kids. Last year the winner took home $650. This year, she has almost 100 people participating. She spent the last two days compiling everyone’s Top 13 picks. There are technically two contests, one where we pick the Top 13 before the competition begins and then another contest where we give her weekly picks. The weekly contest winner gets a higher percentage of the pot than the Top 13 just because that’s a one shot deal and the weekly is more interactive. Most people get zero points on their Top 13 lists because if you’re wrong one week, it automatically means you’ll be wrong another later week.
I’ve been a lot more into American Idol in the past than I am now. I don’t particularly feel invested in this cast, and there’s no one I’m actually rooting for. Last year I was totally on the David Cook bandwagon because I found him so refreshing with all his unique arrangements (and borrowed ones).
The reason I find the pool fun is that I really don’t care about sports, and yet I do very well when I make football picks because I go into the process completely uninformed. I once won a television during a football pool where guys had slaved over their choices and I picked mine based on team colors and the cuteness factor of the mascots. I also factored in whether I’d visited the city the teams came from. But the American Idol pool is totally for us girly-girls. I also participate in a Lost weekly quiz (where the questions are things like, "How many nicknames will Sawyer use tonight?" and "Will Jack Cry tonight?").
(This all being said, I LOVE March Madness, particularly because Syracuse University won the tournament during my senior year of college. Best night ever! And also because I designed the March Madness graphics on CBS. There will be a post about my experience with March Madness coming Monday).
I thought my mom’s American Idol stats were interesting this year so I figured since I’d copy them here.
-Out of thirteen contestants, people picked NINE of them to win.
–Danny had the most votes (33), with Lil (21 votes) coming in second place, then Alexis who had 12 votes . Adam had 10 to win, Allison had 9 votes to win, Scott had 3 votes to win, Anoop 2, Matt 2 and 1 daring person voted for Jorge to win!
-1/3 of the people think Michael will be out tomorrow.
And here’s my list with the caveat that it’s completely wrong!
How I picked these was partially based on talent, partially based on personal opinion, partially based on not having too many girls leaving so close to one another, and also because I didn’t want too many people with the same letter name leaving so close to one another! I picked Allison to win because she was the only singer who made me stop surfing the Internet and pay attention to the show.
Would love to see your Top 13 lists if you watch the show. Post them here or on your blog and we can check back and compare the accuracy as the weeks progress.
