The Silver Lining | What should you do…if you encountered a vampire?

In honor of Marcus Flutie’s (from the Jessica Darling series) and my husband’s birthday today, it’s another giveaway! For a chance to win INFINITE DAYS by Rebecca Maizel, scroll down to the bottom of this post.

I’ve read a lot of YA vampire fiction and it occurred to me recently during a discussion with my friends (this discussion may or may not have included alcohol) that there are so many different rules and discrepancies in the mythology. I feared if someone encountered a vampire, they wouldn’t know the correct protocol of dealing with them. So I’ve created this guide in the hopes of saving lives and giving you  a short guide to making sense of the variety of myths.

I have more guides like this in the works and I’ll be giving books that correspond to the themes in the coming weeks.
Distinguishing the good from the bad

It’s important to immediately assess the situation and figure out exactly what kind of vampire you are dealing with. You don’t want to mistake one for loving you when they really just want to devour you (often one in the same). First thing’s first, don’t panic. Vampires can probably sense your fear or at least read your mind. I suggest reciting Muse lyrics or Western novels over and over in your head just in case.

-The vampire will stalk you. They may sneak into your bedroom, constantly go to the same night club you go to every night and say mysterious things, follow you to a cemetery where you like to write in your diary. Don’t freak out. This is a good thing.
-If the vampire has enrolled in school: either as a student or a teacher/mentor, this is definitely a good thing and you can trust him/her. It means they are able to be around humans without murdering them on the spot. Also, they are probably stalking you.
-In the case of Moroi versus Strigoi, this is very simple. Moroi are alive and they don’t kill when they feed: they just drug their victims. You can safely hang out with Moroi. Moroi are tall and thin and look like supermodels so you will be drawn to them.
-You will probably be dazzled by the vampire. This may also be compulsion. Be careful, sometimes compulsion is used for bad things and/or rebellion like breaking out of school.
-The vampire is a "vegetarian" (i.e. only eats animal blood) OR they have a supplier at the local blood bank to keep them nice and satisfied on human blood without going right to the source.
-Vampire will have green, topaz, black, brown or any variety of normal eyes.

-Often, the vampire will may a witty comment before trying to kill you. THIS IS A BAD SIGN. Watch out for it.
-If the vampire kidnaps you and it’s NOT to prevent you from seeing your werewolf best friend, then I would be wary of the vampire.
-If the vampire "hunts" you. This is not to be confused with the stalking mentioned above. Hunting is when the vampire tracks you across states with the intent of killing you. You should know this is happening so you can prepare.
-The vampire feeds on your friends.
-The vampire’s eyes will either be completely red or contain a red ring around the iris.

Best advice: If you can’t tell immediately by apprearance, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Just say, "Hey, vampire, what kind are you?" A direction question such as "Are you going to kill me and if so, how may I defend myself?" would also work in this situation.

The methods for killing a vampire differ. The first thing you should do is try to assess which kind of vampire you are dealing with so you know how to tell them. I would suggest studying up on the vampires weaknesses to make them easier to kill. If you immediately can’t discern what kind of vampire you have encountered, I think the "guess and check" method would work best in these situations. Try one method, if it doesn’t work, go for the next.
Always be prepared. Wherever you go, carry with you the essential elements required for killing a vampire. I like to employ the Worry: Survival Diminishes Soon. Ohno. "WSDSO" method. It’s like the Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (PEMDAS) mathematics order of operations. Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. The WSDSO method is as follows:
-Wooden stake
-Silver stake
-Decapitation and burning (may require use of a backup vampire or werewolf)

How do you know which weapon can kill which vampire? Look for these simple clues!

-Vampire face differs from normal face. Usually the fangs will lower. Pupils may turn solid black and black lines appear underneath the eyes. Or the face may turn grotesque and demon-like. Your best assent in this instance is simply your eyes.

-The vampire will move with speed and grace and an unnatural red ring will surround the iris.

-The vampire will most likely have red irises, though they may be black
-The vampire will possess super speed and strength
-The vampire may possess a "gift" that may aid them in battle such as "mind reading" or "silent use of Crucio curse"
-Most likely if you have encountered a vampire that requires decapitation and burning, you don’t stand a chance of survival unless you have another vampire or werewolf on your side

-This one is tricky because not all vampires are affected by sunlight. Some just sparkle. Some hate the sunlight because it exposes their corpse-like bodies.
-If the vampire is wearing a gaudy/tacky ring that looks like costume jewelry, then most likely they are immune to sunlight. The best thing you can do is remove the ring and expose them.

-These include things like:
-Holy water
-A Cross

Honestly, if you’ve reached this point and still haven’t killed the vampire, your best bet is probably trying to talk him into turning you into one.

Becoming a vampire could be super easy or extremely difficult, depending on which race you are trying for. Here is a rough breakdown of what you may be looking forward to:

-Some vampires must drink your blood, then allow you to feed on them. This process will make you a vampire.

-Some vampires feel that process is too simple and they take it a few steps farther. After they have fed on you and you have fed on them, you must die with their blood still in your system. The method of dying is entirely optional! You can injest sleeping pills, have the vampire break your neck, get into a car accident. Whatever you want! The possibilities are endless! After you die, you will awaken. You have 24 hours to drink human blood or you will die again. THIS IS IMPORTANT: you do not need to kill at this point. Just consume some blood and you’re good to go.

-Sometimes, just a bite will do. Though the bite will be excrutiatingly painful and will require 3 full days of writhing in agony while the venom makes its way into your system and turns you into an unbreakable hottie. Morphine will help to sedate you, as will a shot of venom to the heart.

-If you’d like to become a Moroi, sorry, you’re out of luck unless you’re born that way. But good news! You still have the option of becoming a Strigoi!

-To become a Strigoi, you must simply be bitten by a Strigoi. However, you are already a Moroi, all you need to do is kill someone else intentionally and you’ll become a Strigoi. Simple as that!

Again, it’s best to ask in this situation so you know what’s in store.

Lastly, it’s best to take as many precautions as you can. I suggest always keeping these items on you or remembering these simple rules:

-Make sure your blood smells like freesia and that your mind is blocked from all vampire abilities. This should make you not only interesting, but will save you in a lot of situations as vampires will wonder what gift you may possess when you’re turned. Also, vampires will probably fall in love with you wherever you go so be aware of that.

-Try to look identical to the lost love of two vampire brothers because that will help to prevent them from killing you.

-If you can’t do either of the above, simple pour vervain into your coffee every morning or wear some around your neck. This will keep you immune from some forms of compulsion.

-You may want to avoid eye contact with a vampire no matter what because if vervain doesn’t work against compulsion, only your will power will help you.

-Wear a cross, just in case. Also, a necklace made from garlic is not only fashionable but delicious.

-Keep a water bottle full of holy water in your purse at all times.

-Know the location of all churches so you may run to one when in need of refuge.

-Some vampires HATE crossing water. Others thrive in it. Best to avoid water just in case.

-Don’t invite anyone into your house, even if you know them. They may be a vampire in disguise. Stalking vampires, however, have the ability to enter your house at will.

When Lenah Beaudonte, a 500-year-old vampire queen, wakes up a human teenager at an ultra-cliquey prep school, she must choose between embracing the humanity she’s always craved and saving her new friends from her vicious coven. The first in a sizzling new YA series.

Lenah Beaudonte is, in many ways, your average teen: the new girl at Wickham Boarding School, she struggles to fit in enough to survive and stand out enough to catch the eye of the golden-boy lacrosse captain. But Lenah also just happens to be a recovering five-hundred-year-old vampire queen. After centuries of terrorizing Europe, Lenah is able to realize the dream all vampires have — to be human again. After performing a dangerous ritual to restore her humanity, Lenah entered a century-long hibernation, leaving behind the wicked coven she ruled over and the eternal love who has helped grant her deep-seated wish.

Until, that is, Lenah draws her first natural breath in centuries at Wickham and rediscovers a human life that bears little resemblance to the one she had known. As if suddenly becoming a teenager weren’t stressful enough, each passing hour brings Lenah closer to the moment when her abandoned coven will open the crypt where she should be sleeping and find her gone. As her borrowed days slip by, Lenah resolves to live her newfound life as fully as she can. But, to do so, she must answer ominous questions: Can an ex-vampire survive in an alien time and place? What can Lenah do to protect her new friends from the bloodthirsty menace about to descend upon them? And how is she ever going to pass her biology midterm?

I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of things for this guide. So for an entry to the contest, I must ask you to tell me in the comments what you would do if you encountered a vampire.

    • This is what happens when I procrastinate on working on my manuscript, haha. The sad thing is I didn’t have to look up any of this info. Too bad I don’t use my photographic memory for more useful things, like foreign languages or learning physics or something.

      Thanks for the award!

  1. Contest Entry

Hi! I’ve been looking all around for a contest for this book!

If I encountered a vampire, I would break open my cross necklace (because of course I would have a cross necklace with a special vial for garlic) and also extend the necklace (it extends into a stake, by the way) and knock him out with the garlic and stake him.

I would go towards the more romantic side, but I fear real vampires would laugh at my fictional ideas of them and bite/kill me, haha.
