The Silver Lining | Bookanistas Review: BAD TASTE IN BOYS

This week for the Bookanistas I had the pleasure of reading BAD TASTE IN BOYS by fellow Bookanista Carrie Harris.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Someone’s been a very bad zombie.

Kate Grable is horrified to find out that the football coach has given the team steroids. Worse yet, the steriods are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe–not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate!

She’s got to find an antidote–before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town  . . . and stay hormonally human.

MY THOUGHTS:

I’ve been so eager to read this book ever since I first heard about it. A funny paranormal? YES PLEASE! I am a HUGE fan of funny books but I know how hard humor is to pull off. Luckily, Carrie knocks it out of the park. I was laughing and smiling at nearly every sentence in here. WOW ON THE VOICE. I’m seriously impressed.

I just adored the premise of this book too. The coach of the football team is unintentionally turning his players into zombies? Seriously, how awesome is that? And Kate is such a great character. Her passion for science and medicine not only drove the plot but made Kate unique and quirky. I loved that she was the student trainer for the football team. How interesting! Her desire to be a doctor brought back a lot of memories of when I was in high school and for five minutes I thought I wanted to be a doctor. Note that this was BEFORE we had to dissect a cow’s eyeball and a frog. My interest in medicine quickly shifted into only a small desire for Midol once a month. But I loved reading Kate’s thoughts because it was almost like I could have easily been her. (Except minus the whole classmate zombie part since I’m hoping to avoid the zombiepocolypse in my lifetime.) I also loved how Kate owned her nerdiness. It was nice to see a character embrace it instead of trying to change it.

Now, I must talk about Jonah, one of my favorite characters EVER. You might think I’m talking about the love interest (he’s great too!!!! Chivalrous and sexy and willing to stick by Kate despite Zombie-inflicted unsightly wounds) but I’m not. I’m talking about Kate’s brother!!! It was so refreshing to see two siblings in a novel that actually liked each other, that wanted to hang out and help each other out. This was my favorite part of the book. I want a brother like Jonah! (Also, I want a pseudosword. And my birthday is coming up. Just saying…)

Kate definitely takes the reigns from Buffy on this one in both witty quips and kick-buttness. I can’t wait for everyone else to meet her in a few months! You’ll fall in love too!

  1. I already had this one on my “to-read” list, but since you’ve compared the MC to Buffy….well, now I HAVE to read it!

Carrie’s blog is hilarious, so I can just imagine what her book is going to be like.
